How To Use A VPN for Gaming

In this day and age of technology, gaming isn’t confined to one’s local PC. As an avid gamer, you might want to showcase your gaming prowess to other players around the globe. That’s where you need a VPN or Virtual Private Network to fulfill your gaming desires. This post won’t discuss how to use a VPN while gaming but why you should invest in a VPN.

What Is The Need To Use A VPN For Gaming?

Before we dive into how you can use a VPN for gaming, let’s have a look at some of the reasons why a VPN is good for gaming –

1. Bypass Geo-Restrictions – Some games out there are geo-restricted, meaning you can play them only if you live in a certain location. A VPN helps bypass restrictions.

2. Keep Away From DDoS Attacks  – A VPN masks your IP address. This means that if any miscreant tries a DDoS attack, you won’t be flooded with unwanted data.

3. Steer Clear of Swatting – While not a very common scenario, it’s been reported that gamers get so agitated in multiplayer games that they try and stalk other players. A VPN hides your IP. As such, no one will be able to track your location or hack into your social media account.

4. Stay Safe on Public Wi-Fi – Gamers are most vulnerable when using public Wi-Fi. A VPN keeps you safe during Man-in-the-Middle attacks, where an attacker tracks your data between your PC and the internet. You can fearlessly go gaming while at an airport or a cafe’.

5. Reduce Lags and Ping Time – When playing games such as Battlefield 1, you may encounter lags and increased ping times (when not using a VPN). With a VPN, you can shorten connection routes and reduce these factors.

6. Malware Won’t Be Able To Touch Your Data – VPNs employ military-grade encryption and other security protocols. Neither will a hacker be able to track your location, nor will they be able to install malware on your device.

7. Play Games Without Fearing Bandwidth Throttling – Sometimes ISPs (Internet Service Providers) throttle your bandwidth if they detect heavy traffic or data usage. But, when using a VPN, your ISP cannot see your location and won’t be able to cut down the speed.

  6. Systweak VPN even lets you change the protocol from OpenVPN to IKEv2.
  7. That’s it! You can now enjoy gaming while not revealing your data or online identity.

When Not Use A VPN?

We are of the notion that VPN is good for gaming, but it does come with drawbacks. Let’s put it this way there are instances where a VPN will not work –

  • VPN’s Not Legal In Certain Countries – While VPN is legal in most countries, there are certain countries where a VPN is banned. These include Iraq, China, Russia, North Korea, Turkey, and Belarus.
  • Some Games Ban The Use Of a VPN – Some online games don’t allow the use of a VPN. That’s because not every VPN user has good motives. For instance, they may share illegal stuff or copyrighted material online. It is advisable not to use VPN for such ulterior motives and check the game’s terms and conditions before using a VPN to play it.
  • Don’t Use A VPN If Increasing Speed Is Your Motive – If you are close to the game server, you’ll get a good speed; if you are farther away, the speed will be slow. But that doesn’t mean you will get more than your ISP or router offers. So, if the internet speed is your concern, you may get a better router, a better plan for your internet service, or better hardware.
